Why Let Our Students Blog? (Version 1.5)

17 comments:

  1. This video is one I found on YouTube that I felt was a good one for explaining why it is good to use blogs in the classroom. I agree with the reasons provided and is why I chose to use a blog for this reading.

The video portrays young children which I believe is good because I think you should start incorporating multiple strategies (utilizing technology) at an early age. This is a "Video Age," and as educators, we must prepare our students to function in this type of society.

How do you feel about blogging?

  2. It's amazing what so many young students can do with technology already! I am from the dark ages, and can't even keep up with my work and personal e-mail and facebook---so blogging probably won't be my thing.

  3. At first i was a little confused at how to operate this blog thing! I've never read or participated in one before. But after i got the hang of it and realize how to do it, i have thoroughly enjoyed it. It is very interesting to see the other classmates posts and the view they take on the book. It helps me out very much in understanding the small things, because they may of caught a small detail in the book that i may not of!

  4. I think it's a pretty awesome way for us to have a discussion on a book we're all reading. For really young kids like they showed in the video I'd be a little concerned because people online can sometimes "act a fool" and make ugly comments and such just for the shock value. I think it's easy enough to make a blog be password-protected, though, or make it so comments have to be approved before posting them. Overall, a fantastic tool. I could see having some sort of pen-pal program or something, too, with students from other countries :)

  5. I have to admit i found blogging more frustrating and time consuming than i thought it was worth at first. However, having mastered the basics of it, I can see how it would be a successful tool for students in modern society. It's a good way to allow students the freedom of expression and to keep up with those (blogs) on subjects or by other bloggers which interest them. It's a great tool for lengthy communication and criticism and i can see how it would encourage good academic habits such as writing development and journal keeping.

  6. At first, I was totally lost and frustrated because I didn't know how to get started. Thanks to Anne Victory, a fellow classmate,I know the basics to be able to post a comment. I can see this as being an awesome way to let students communicate with others to improve on writing skills and stay actively engaged with teaching and learning.

  7. It's nice to see what other people in class have to say on topics being discussed. Everyone is always telling us that we need to have different strategies when it comes to teaching and I think blogging would be great. It would give students a chance to respond to a topic and a chance to give their opinions to one another.

  8. I found blogging very frustrating but once I got the hang of it I found it helpful with class. I am able to see more of what other class mates are posting and their comments. I see the advantage of blogging and the interaction it allows vs. other online classes.

  9. Wow! I have to show this at a faculty meeting and to our Parish Tech folks! For the past year, two of my peers and I have been investigating and pursuing Project Based Learning. This includes multiple use of Technology in our classrooms. It is a "different" way to learn. We must broaden our horizons and tear down the walls of the classrooms in order for our students to compete with others in the world. We are not preparing our students to compete for jobs after their education is complete. We must allow them to blog, twitter, skype, ect. The computer has to be an extension of the daily classroom setting. Thank you for this post! A wonderful book to read is, The World is Flat. It will open your eyes.....

  10. I think blogging is a great tool for the classroom. I am so new at this! I actually set up a blog account serveral years ago, but was never able to figure it out. I am hoping that maybe I can start blogging now. Honestly, I never thought about using it in the classroom until now. It would be a great way for the students to express themselves using a mean other than paper and pencil. I do agree with Arkali that it would have to be password protected and comments would have to be approved before they were allowed to be posted. My mind is already racing with ideas of how I could use this in my classroom!

  11. I, like others, thought that blogging was going to be a headache. After I figured it out, I really have enjoy it. To me, it is like posting to a discussion board question. There are a lot of children on the computers in classrooms all across America, and I believe that this is something great for them. It is a good way to expand their horizons!

  12. I think it allows everyone to have a voice and I think we all have something to say. I too have been very frustrated when trying to blog because this is new to me, but I plan to continue to try. I can see how students can be motivated and also extend the wall of their classroom. This was nice.

  13. I tried to create a classroom blog once, but I mainly used it to communicate with parents. I wasn't very good about updating it. :( I think a blog could be a useful tool in the classroom.

  14. I tried to use a blog website in my classroom, but found it difficult to keep up. I started it too late in the school year and didn't make it mandatory. I teach middle school students and if you don't stay on top of it and hold the students accountable, you will get all kinds of statments that do not pertain to the subject at hand. I plan to try it again and use it for a grade, this time, but I will start from the beginning of the school year and show the students what is needed to write a good comment to a question. I feel it does allow those student who may feel self conscious about asking or answering questions in the classroom to particpate without being ridiculed by their peers.

  15. I feel that blogging is a great way to communicate with others outside the classroom. It is a way of self-expression in a very creative sense. Blogging is a door to other viewpoints of different people. It helps us expand our thoughts outside of our own. Reading and commenting on others' blogs may change or perspective on things or stand firmly on our own beliefs. Not only does this help with literacy skills but also technology skills since the world is turning towards a more digital age.

  16. Even though I come from the old school, technology is the way of the future. Our children need to be exposed to as much technolgy as possible. I can see where blogging could be beneficial. This was the first time for me and I can say it was alittle difficult, but I am up to the challenge to use this in my classroom.

  17. I think we should let our student blog because it opens up discussion for those who may be shy to speak out in a classroom. Also, with the society evolving to a world of technology knowing how to blog will be a must to function. I'm getting used to it but at first I struggled! LOL!
